Developing A Family Friendly Home

Just because you’ve got small children does not mean that you just cannot possess a tastefully decorated home. Here are several great ideas that can be used for making your house more “child friendly” without needing to lock everything away.

Living With Toddlers

Many people have the wrong assumption that, if they have toddlers in the house, anything that is breakable must be locked away until it is safe to put them on display again. All you have to do is rearrange a little - glass and porcelain household goods and collectibles can be moved so that they are unreachable by putting them on a higher shelf or on top of a piano. You can shift unbreakables, like silver, baskets, wooden boxes, and metal objects, down to the lower surfaces which are toddler height like lower shelves, coffee tables, and side tables.

In a baby or toddler’s bedroom, put soft toys and books on low shelves where they are able to be easily reached by the child, and display picture frames and breakable keepsakes on top shelves, out of reach. Make sure all furnishings with tip-over potential are securely attached to the wall to avoid unfortunate accidents.

If you’re a fan of cutesy frames, a child’s room is the ideal spot to display pictures in cute baby picture frames or sweet heart picture frames.

When The Children Grow…

Baby rooms can easily be transformed into a more “grown-up” looking space with a few simple changes: For reading, you are able to replace your rocking chair with a comfortable upholstered chair.

Many changing tables are positioned atop a complete dresser; take away the changing table top and place some wall shelves above and you’ll get several more years out of the dresser.

Any “baby” designs and fabrics might be replaced with slightly older choices, like stripes or plaids that you find which go along with the general color scheme and complement the walls and floors.

When you’re completed with floor toys for your babies, an excellent replacement would be a set of sturdy chairs and a small table you can use for drawing, enjoying games, and having a “tea party.” A young child always appreciates a place of their own where they’re able to play with friends or play alone.

When the walls are covered with “baby” wallpaper, take it off and replace it using a simple light colored vinyl paper that washable - pick one that coordinates with the fabrics in the room.

Closed In Storage Space

If you have kids, there never seems to be enough storage space. One method to extend your space would be to store clothing that’s out of season in closed storage bins where you cannot see it, and put on the top shelf of the closet.

Whether it’s within the child’s room or another room in your home where your youngster plays, it’s nice to have some open shelving for children to enjoy their toys and books, but it’s also nice to keep a lot of them out of sight for a less cluttered look, and hopefully less overall mess. A trunk of some kind is desirable for some people, but be cautious with this particular choice since the lid might slam upon your child’s little fingers. A less hazardous method to have closed storage is in cabinets that have sliding doors or doors and drawers that open out, or possibly a combination of both. You can easily find such storage cabinets that can fit inside a closet, too.

So, if you have a toddler in your home, don’t despair. Try these tips and you and your child will enjoy your home.
